Each of us can do something to help
You do not need to be a professional to help people who are struggling. Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in a person’s life. It’s time for all of us to step up and do what we can to help each other — it’s one of the best things we can do for our own mental health.
Neighborhood Wellness Watch
Reach out to people you’ve not heard from in a while. Ask how they’re doing and listen for cues they may need support or help.
Five Days. Five People.
Make the effort to connect with someone every day of the week and let them know they matter to you — it will matter to them.
Start a Meaningful Project
Bring people together to do something useful — clean a lot, build a basketball court, fix a fence or paint a house. Then do it again.
Volunteer Your Time
Set aside a specific time each week to work at a foodbank, crisis line, animal shelter or any organization that helps during times of need.
Become a Coach or Mentor
Become a tutor or assist with an afterschool activity for young people. Mentor a person trying to better their life and help them to thrive.
Invest in Our Social Safety Net
If you don’t have time, then donate money or materials to help organizations that are trying to support the most vulnerable members of our community.
Create a Virtual Chat
Set up a weekly online chat room for your neighbors, friends, furloughed co-workers, Little-League parents (if it matters, Little League has actually resumed) and other people you used to hang out with.
Strike Up a Conversation
Talk to the person at the bus stop or grocery store every day. Ask them how they’re getting by and let them know you care.
